Every journey from Exeter to Weymouth that we found involved at least one change. The main route is two GWR trains with a change at Castle Cary: the first from Exeter St Davids, 46 minutes, then a second train for the last 68 minutes. Door to door, that came to about 2h 45m on a typical run and 2h 33m on the quickest.
Less than two hours of that is spent moving. The rest is the connection: on the weekday timetable we checked, the wait at Castle Cary was close to 50 minutes on a typical journey and nearer 40 on the quickest. The one upside is margin: a late-running train out of Exeter has most of that time to lose before the Weymouth connection is in danger.
Six departures from Exeter St Davids connected this way, at 05:52, 07:44, 11:43, 13:42, 15:42 and 17:52. Mid-morning, between the 07:44 and the 11:43, is the awkward part of the day; a 09:43 with a change at Westbury instead took the same 2h 45m or so, and Westbury also offered a late 19:56 and another option at 15:42. An early 07:52 changing at Taunton as well as Castle Cary was a few minutes quicker than a typical run.
A third pattern ran at 07:25, 11:25, 13:25, 15:25 and 16:25: a train to Yeovil Junction, a bus to Yeo Leisure Park, then a train on to Weymouth, about three hours in all. Routings via Bristol Temple Meads ran more often but took around four hours, and those through Salisbury and Southampton Central closer to five. They are there if everything else has gone, not as a first choice.
Driving is far quicker here. The A35 route is 62 miles and takes about 1h 40m, over an hour less than the train, which makes the car the better option for anyone who has one.
Weymouth station is roughly 890 metres, or twelve minutes on foot, from St Mary Street in the town centre.
